Survey: Companion animal euthanasia practices of veterinarians in Australia 01 March 2022

 

Euthanasia of companion animals is performed in both emergency and non-emergency circumstances by veterinarians in Australia.

We are seeking to document the methods of euthanasia utilised by Australian veterinarians.

This online survey is completely anonymous, and we estimate it will take no longer than 10 minutes.

The survey is open to veterinarians registered in an Australian State or Territory. All participants must be over 18 years of age.

CVO Bulletin Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) 01 March 2022

 

Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) has been detected in samples from six piggeries across southern, central and north-western NSW as well as one Victorian and one Queensland property.  This is the first time the virus has been detected in NSW livestock samples and suggests it is circulating in the higher-than-normal mosquito populations which have been reported in many areas of the state.

JEV does not present a food safety risk and all Australian grown pork remains safe to eat however, the virus does cause reproductive failures in pigs.

Recent testing at Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute (EMAI) has diagnosed West Nile virus – Kunjin strain (WNVKUN) in four foals in two distant parts of the state. Important message for veterinary students and employers 23 December 2021

Registration as a veterinarian


Only a registered person is able to refer to themselves as a veterinarian and perform restricted acts of veterinary science.  As many veterinary students are aware, there is an exemption from registration for students completing the requirements for a course accredited by the AVBC. 

Importantly, this exemption does not apply to students who have completed the requirements of the course and are awaiting their results.
