NPWS: Seabird identification

Seabird identification can be difficult if volunteers do not have access to accurate identification resources or experienced members who have learnt how to identify and assess species correctly.

In NSW, about 20% of all rescued seabirds were unable to be identified to either family or species level. This can lead to poor decisions at the initial assessment phase which is critical in evaluating the condition of individuals and the likelihood of a successful release.

Penny E Beaver has designed a new identification guide for the most common species rescued and unidentified which includes a new bill outline tool.
